Sean na Ghael

Friday 14th March saw the inaugural Seanna Ghael event in the New Complex in Horeswood. The initiative, which was the brainchild of Michael Duffin, saw over twenty former players assemble for night of song, story and refreshment. Travel was provided if necessary, though Michael Duffin was fortunate that Sim Hickey found his own way from Kildare!

The evening was catered by Theresa Duffin and Margie Kane and what a spread they provided. Many thanks for their efforts and good humour throughout.

A much appreciated Mary Power provided the musical entertainment to rapt attention and several of the Seanna Gael gave those attending a song or two. Jim Foley of Ballykelly regaled all with yarns and stories, several of which placed the men of Campile village in poor light. An all-points bulletin has surely been issued for any sightings of Jim in the village. Victor Murphy, in his incarnation as David Bailey, took photos throughout the night. We hope to post same at a later date.

As the end of the night approached former Chairman, Derry Clancy, on behalf of the Seanna Ghael, was gracious in his appreciation of the event and its success.

We look forward to building on the success of the evening at some time in the future.

Secretary's Report

John Kenny, in his Secretary's Report, summarised the year on the playing fields. The Senior Football campaign began in great hope and expectation and it was noted how injuries and the vagaries of the league system mitigated against us when we exited after the game against Ballyhogue. Nothwithstanding that, the squad did win the Premier C division of the League.

The Junior B Footballers maintained their league status despite some difficulties in fielding teams.

John went on to give credit to hurling mentors Declan O'Hanlon and Niall O'Connor for the progress made with the Juni0r team which retained its league status and made it to the final of the 'B' Championship.

The difficulty the Club found fielding Junior B teams was addressed and John recommended that a sub-committeee consisting of the Junior B management teams should tackle the issue.

The Ladies' Football Club were the success of the year. Their League and Junior Championship victories were testament to the hard work put in by the players, management and committee. The Under-12 Girls also won a Rackard League title.

The Report then dealt with activities off the pitch. The palpable success of the Development Committee was commended: the completion of the meeting room, dressing rooms and showers in the indoor complex and the placing of a glass wall in the handball alley. Thanks was extended to all those who had helped in the work with a special mention for George Hearn and Ger Breen.

Gratitude was extended to Jimmy Murphy in his role as Model County Draw co-ordinator.

The Golf Classic proved a great success and John thanked his sub-committee for their contribution ot its success. John also thanked the Club for its decision to allow a share of the procedds to go to the Sunshine Homes hospice for sick children project.

Our main sponsors, Hart's of Campile, were thanked for their support, as was the Brandon House Hotel, New Ross and others who made financial contributuions to the Club.

Thanks were offered to Sean Clancy and his Membership Committee for their work on increasing membership.

The newly formed Camogie Club was praise for its recent strides.

Congratulations were extended to all those who represented Wexford during the year and special mention was made of Ciaran Deely who honoured the Club as captain of the Wexford Senior Football team.

The success of the Horeswood Hoodie was credited to Eileen O'Sullivan for all her hard work. Over 300 hoodies have now been sold.

Special mention was made of the late Anne Parker whose contribution to the progress of Horeswood GAA Club both on and off the field was enormous.

After eight years in the post John annonced that he was stepping down from the role. He thanked all those he had worked with, especially the two chaimen he has worked with, Owen O'Connor and Michael Duffin.

The Club would like to thank John for the contribution he has made as Secretary.

Chairman's Report

As with John, Chairman Michael Duffin also made a valedictory speech. After seven years in the job, Mick too, was standing down.

Michael thanked all those who had made a contribution to Horeswood GAA Club in the past year. He thanked John Kenny for his work on the successful Golf Classic and Jimmy Murphyfor co-ordinating the Model County Draw. He also wished Jimmy a speedy recovery.

He congratulated all those who represented Wexford with special mention of Wexford Senior Football captain, Ciaran Deely.

The Chairman then detailed the various campaigns on the field. Our Senior Football experience was described as a bitter pill from which we should learn. He reiterated his belief that another County title was within our grasp.

Our appearance in the Junior Hurling 'B' Championship Final was refered to, as was the difficulty faced in fielding Junior B teams. Clongeen's record; 2 football championships and the above mentioned Hurling 'B' title was presented as an example of operating with success in a number of areas.

Moving onto Development, Mick thanked all those who had contributed and encouraged more people to partake in the development and the facilities. It was his firm wish that development never stops.

The efforts all those involved in Horeswood Coiste na nÓg were thanked as was the Ladies' Football Club for their contribution throughout the year> The Ladies were also congratulated on their successful year on the playing fields.

The Scor team which won the Senior Quiz title was also congratulated.

Gratitude was extended to an effective Committee, especially Sean Clancy's Membership sub-committee and Larry O'Brien's handling of equipment and catering.

Hart's was thanked for its sponsorship of the Club.

Mick thanked the Secretary and Treasurer who helped make his job easier. The Chairman indicated that the club we have is the club we make ourselves and that things are better well done than well said. He emphasised the importance of community service and then signed off.
